Freshwater Pearl and Coral Necklace

The origin of the word coral is traced to Greek "korllion" and Latin "coralium" probably both derived from the early Hebrew "goral" meaning "small pebble". Appearing as solitary forms in the fossil record more than 400 million years ago, corals are extremely ancient animals that evolved into modern reef-building forms over the last 25 million years.

Pearls were presented as gifts to Chinese royalty as early as 2300 BC, while in ancient Rome, pearl jewelry was considered the ultimate status symbol. So precious were the spherical gems that in the 1st century BC, Julius Caesar passed a law limiting the wearing of pearls only to the ruling classes.

Both of these methods are likely to damage the outer layer of the pearl.

*HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CORAL: Chlorine, alcohol, ammonia, nail polish remover, and other household chemicals can damage the gemstone. Avoid exposing coral pieces to extreme temperatures. To clean coral jewelry, wipe it gently with a soft, damp cloth.
